The Project Fibonacci® Foundation is a leader in promoting science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) educational opportunities in New York state. This year it took place July 22-28th in Rome, New York.

Dr. Stuart Card of Critical Technologies, Mr. Christopher Smolen and Ms. Shannon Guernsey of Upstate Networks Inc., presented to students wanting to learn more about Bitcoin, Blockchains, Cryptocurrencies & Smart Contracts.

Dr. Card opened the presentation with the history of Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency. He explained how it got to the point it is today; The who, what, where, when and why. Once students had some understanding on it, we continued to break down the complexity of the block chain, into terms and examples that everyone could relate to, including smart contracts and the creation of an ERC 20 token.

Mr. Smolen demonstrated the reduction to practice of a smart contract that has been developed with an ERC-20 token. We demonstrated how to see transactions via Etherscan.io, a current cryptocurrencies exchange, and what it all means.

At the beginning of the presentation, Each student received a PLUM™ paper wallet. We directed them to Etherscan.io to check the balance. Throughout the presentation, Shannon Guernsey loaded PLUM to each students wallets using an ERC-20 token App on a cellphone. Taking the time to show each student, to ensure that they see and understand what was being demonstrated.

We continued with a smart contract, ERC-20 Token (PLUM™) , and a physical hardware that Upstate Networks Inc. developed, we were able to show the students how cryptocurrencies could be used in real life settings. For this particular example, a purchase was made from a vending machine using PLUM™ coin.

Dr. Card concluded the presentation with showing the variety of things cryptocurrency is being used for and the endless possibilities it could be developed into and used for.

By the end of the presentation, each student checked the balance of their personal wallet with Etherscan.io, and verified the transactions made during the presentation. This allowed for each student to participate in Blockchains, Cryptocurrencies & Smart Contracts and understand how it works a little better.

It was a pleasure for us to be able to educate and interact with STEAM scholars. Looking ahead at the generations to come, we aim to enlighten, educate and implement. With the influence of young scholars, the direction of blockchains, cryptocurrencies and smart contracts could transform into amazing things.
